Conservative Grant Shapps won his Welwyn Hatfield seat after promising a Tory government would call a moratorium on the closure of a local accident and emergency and maternity unit.

He and Andrew Lansley had spoken to managers at the primary care trust about the units at Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Welwyn Garden City.

But in a statement on Shapps’ website, Lansley said the call was “not about undoing” the work East and North Hertfordshire Trust were doing with the Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

The Welwyn MP added that it was “barking mad… to be presenting plans for a slimmed-down hospital”.
