WINNER: Serving prisoner involvement in the procurement of Healthcare Services: ABL Health in partnership with North of England Commissioning Support Unit and Her Majesty’s Prison & Probation Service

A serving prisoner was supported to bring a different perspective to the procurement of prison healthcare, playing a full role on the consensus panel at the heart of decisions on the procurement.

ABL Health is commissioned by NHS England to lead on patient participation and engagement sessions across 35 prisons in the north of England.

Its work includes setting up health councils in each prison, capturing service users’ opinions and experiences across a range of healthcare departments. It has tried to get representation from each wing or prison area with a wide range of prisoners represented. It has also tried to engage with prisoners who may struggle to attend a focus group including those in segregation units and inpatient units.
