Hospital campaign MPs retain seats by small margin
Two Liberal Democrat MPs who fought a five year battle to preserve an emergency unit in south west London have been returned with majorities of around 2,000.
Tom Brake of Carshalton and Wallington and Paul Burstow, representing Sutton and Cheam, both saw off Tory challengers after claiming victory in getting St Helier Hospital, part of Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals Trust, re-built.
They and Labour MP Siobhain McDonagh in neighbouring Mitcham and Morden had pressed for St Helier’s A&E to be preserved in a review of services across north Surrey and south west London.
Outgoing health minister Mike O’Brien announced the £220m redevelopment of St Helier in March.
