WINNER: Cardiff and Vale University Health Board: The NHS Wales University Eye Care Centre

The treatment of ophthalmic patients is a perfect storm, say organisers, with an acute sector that simply does not have the capacity to treat effectively the ageing population and the 7 per cent of citizens with diabetes, unless treated timely will cause irreversible harm to their sight.

The footprint of the Eye Care Outpatients Suite in the University Hospital of Wales is simply not able to be expanded to support the needed throughput of patients. A major strategic re-think and a 100-day challenge in May 2021 with Cardiff University led to the opening of the NHS Wales University Eye Care in September 2021.
