Martha’s Rule Pilot

The Yorkshire and Humber PCC ODN Regional Martha’s Rule Pilot recognised that implementation in paediatrics would be challenging due to variation in services across hospital providers. The pilot therefore focused on developing adaptable approaches that build on existing systems. Region‑wide engagement with families, children, young people and staff was prioritised to inform development and ensure inclusion of seldom‑heard voices. Key outputs included Regional Principles which were subsequently corroborated and validated by the NHS core standards; an enactment flowchart promoting “fresh eyes” reviews; and a workbook supporting triage and clinical review, focused on advocacy, communication, bias awareness and structured review.
