Health Inequalities in Endoscopy; DNA Predictor and Navigation Pilot

The Core20PLUS5 framework recommends focusing on the 20 per cent most deprived communities, with particular attention to early cancer diagnosis to reduce harm. When patients miss diagnostic appointments, especially for cancer tests, this can lead to treatment delays, require additional resources to reschedule, and potentially result in more advanced disease at diagnosis.

To address this issue, the trust’s public health team collaborated with information services, endoscopy and cancer services departments to create a predictive risk model. This tool identifies patients who are likely to miss endoscopy appointments due to health inequalities. Patients calculated to have a 10 per cent or greater probability of non-attendance received proactive phone calls before their appointments, helping staff understand and address potential barriers to attendance.
