Hyperemesis and Virtual Ward

Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) affects up to 90 per cent of pregnancies, with 4 per cent of women experiencing the more severe form, hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). This condition frequently leads to multiple GP appointments, emergency department visits, and hospital stays.

To minimise the psychological, social and financial burden of repeated hospitalisations on patients and their families, the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s Hyperemesis Team partnered with the hospital’s virtual ward service. Together, they developed and implemented an ambulatory care pathway for managing HG. Initial feedback from service users indicates the initiative enhanced patient experience while reducing both financial and environmental costs, without compromising on clinical care quality.
