Podiatry Non Medical Prescribing Pilot: to Demonstrate Clinical Safety and Effectiveness of Managing Moderate Foot Infection in High-Risk Groups of Patients at Risk of Lower Limb Amputation

The Southampton locality undertook a nine-month prescribing pilot to evaluate the effectiveness of Podiatry Non-Medical Prescribers (NMPs). At the time, prescription costs were absorbed by the service, which was unsustainable without a designated prescribing budget.

The pilot collected data across the entire geographical footprint of the Podiatry service, with a specific focus on Southampton-registered patients. Metrics monitored included the number of patients prescribed antibiotics by Podiatry NMPs and the number of patients issued antibiotics through patient group directions.

The study also tracked the frequency of GP antibiotic request letters, gathered patient feedback regarding infection management and prescription processes, and identified patterns of antibiotic sensitivity and resistance.
