Psychological Safety for Internationally Educated Colleagues or The Wellbeing of International Nurses

The organisation implemented this initiative to support internationally educated nurses (IENs) transitioning to the NHS, addressing isolation and improving integration. Key improvements included creating a Teams Channel hub for 358 international staff, partnering with community groups, arranging study skills courses with Hull University, and delivering leadership training through the RCN Developing Leaders programme.

Results showed significant improvements in Objective Structured Clinical Examination pass rates (first-time passes increased from 30 per cent to 46 per cent), reducing costs by £8,734 and shortening supernumerary periods. The initiative also created pathways for international candidates to become healthcare assistants. Feedback from IENs was positive, though a key learning was the need for flexibility beyond the initial four-week integration plan.
