Reducing the Incidence of Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) in Post-Surgical Patients and Improving the Recognition and Care for Those Who do Develop a Clot.

The project set out to conduct a systems engineering initiative for patient safety (SEIPS) review of the entire venous thromboembolism (VTE) process across Spire hospitals nationwide, having identified this as an area requiring improvement. The aim was to develop and implement actions to address concerns and resolve identified issues. Through this work, the team created action packs and development plans that have successfully reduced avoidable VTE by 64 per cent among patients over the past two years, thereby reducing this life-threatening surgical complication and improving patient outcomes. The project ran from summer 2023 to summer 2025.
