Controlling Theatre Ventilation to Generate Energy and Carbon Savings

Research at Nuffield Health York Hospital has examined the environmental impact of switching off operating theatre air handling units (AHUs) overnight. Operating theatres are significant contributors to healthcare carbon emissions, and detailed energy monitoring showed substantial reductions in electricity, gas, carbon emissions, and costs. Working with University College London, the data gathered has informed published research and NHS guidance. The project supports NHS net zero targets by showing how intelligent ventilation control can reduce carbon emissions across the health service, delivering both environmental and operational benefits.
