Transforming Venous Thromboembolism Care With AI: the Follow-up Finder project
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of preventable hospital deaths, costing the NHS £640m each year, according to Thrombosis UK. At Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, thrombosis nurse specialists were struggling to manually review more than 900 scans daily. Working with Solventum, they developed Follow-up Finder-VTE, an artificial intelligence tool that reviews radiology reports in real time and generates accurate electronic patient record alerts. The results have been significant: VTE diagnoses increased by 48 per cent, detection of hospital-acquired thrombosis rose 3.5-fold, avoidable hospital-acquired thrombosis fell by 40 per cent, efficiency savings exceeded £400,000, and two hours of nursing time were released daily.
